A further word on Hyacinth

WITH our short respite well and truly over, TMPA is back tackling a range of unwelcome problems.
Actions in the courts to deal with appeals in connection with Gaven Developments (supermarket) and the over-development proposed for the St.  Bernard’s site are slowly proceeding.

TMPA will appeal Hyacinth decision

THIS special issue of TMNEWS has been printed because, for the past twelve months, the TM Progress Association has, on behalf of the Mountain community, been coping with the debacle of a series of unlawful Council approvals for the Hyacinth development.  These approvals have caused TMPA members many hours of effort in bringing the Court action which has successfully averted the major tourist development, complete with caged birds, parking space for 20 tourist buses, parking for about 180 cars, a restaurant, motel and residential units – maximum 135 bedrooms, office and manager’s residence.

Canungra supermarket application

PROBLEMS for the iconic villages in our area don’t go away.

Canungra is again having to deal with a renewed application for a major Shopping Centre.  About 70 attended a meeting in Canungra a week ago to discuss the prospect.  It rapidly became clear that the undesirable aspects were remarkably similar to those of the disputed Tamborine Mountain project.  Some points of comparison:

“Hyacinth” – the court decides

EARLY in 2008 work commenced on the long-vacant site opposite the State School on Long Road.  This site had been rezoned in 1993 to Special Facilities (Tourist Facility) with permitted uses including a restaurant, motel and residential units – maximum of 135 bedrooms, office and manager’s residence to be generally in accordance with a Plan of Development dated 9 August 1990.

Turning the sod on new Regional Sports Facility

TMN1264_LongRdSodturnTUESDAY 13th October 2009 was an auspicious day for Tamborine Mountain, when the first sod was turned on construction of the extensive new Regional Sports Facility in Long Road.

In front of an impressive background of earthmoving equipment the Federal Member for Forde, Brett Raguse, flanked by Mayor John Brent and Division 1 Cr Derek Swanborough, turned the first symbolic sod.

Other Councillors and representatives of local organizations including the TM Progress Association witnessed the event.
The start of work on the international-standard sports complex is the culmination of years of planning and advocacy by Derek Swanborough, Vanessa Bull, Alan Blackman, Geoff Buckley and others.  Federal funding was brought about through the diligence of Mr Raguse with the co-operation of the SRRC.
